Camera-ready/file submission requirements
All display ads must meet at least one of the two following criteria: |
- An electronic file submitted via email or on CD. Acceptable file types are PDF (set to hi-resolution -- "press-ready"), JPG or TIF (no less than 300 dpi). Sorry, MS Publisher and Word files require re-setting and are not considered camera-ready. We can accept them and re-set them to approximate your submission for the set-up fees listed on our advertising page.
- For B&W ads only -- A printed, non-folded paper positive. Laser or inkjet prints are fine. The higher the resolution the better, but in no case less than 300 dpi. If there are gradients, fine details or photos, no less than 600 dpi.

Additional info for submitting electronic files:
The Networker is printed on newsprint paper, which presents a few extra challenges for ad presp. A few helpful hints follow to help you make the create the best (and safest) ad possible for this type of printing.
- If a file is sent in RGB format, the printer converts them to CMYK or B&W (grayscale) accordingly. When this happens, colors tend to get darker. It is best to make sure all color ads are set to CMYK and B&W ads are set to grayscale before submitting (including any/all embedded files).
- With newsprint printing there is less of a color range than "normal" hi-res printing. Extremely light colors and dark colors will become even lighter and darker than intended due to diminishing dots or dot gain.
- B&W ads should have a grayscale range between 20% and 80% to avoid diminishing dots and dot gain.
- When creating colors, it is safest to use 2-ink combination; i.e. cyan/magenta, cyan/yellow, yellow/magenta or black with any of the other three. If additional inks are needed for the desired result, be sure that total ink coverage is a maximum of 260%.
| |
-- 25c, 100m, 25y = 150% -- okay |
| |
-- 20c, 100m = 120% -- close match, safer 2-ink combo |
| |
-- 80c, 30m, 100y = 210% -- okay |
| |
-- 100c, 100y = 200% -- brighter green, but safer 2-ink combo |
- Fonts -- Really thin fonts or pt. sizes that are too small are discouraged, especially when dropping them out of a dark background. The "legs" on a serif font could disappear, as well. Colors may close in around them due to ink saturation and dot gain.
- Black text -- it is best to use 100% black ink only. If cyan, magenta and yellow are part of your ink build, the text may have a "halo" and appear fuzzy.
Also, make sure that black text is set to "overprint." Otherwise it may drop out of any background graphics you have and create a white halo.
