Note from the Editor/Publisher
ROAD TRIP! We traveled to the Lavender Festival in Fairfield, PA to speak with James A. Duke, Ph.D., perhaps the father of modern U.S. herbal medicine, who was the main presenter. Such a joy to be among beds of lavender and so many other herbs!
This issue also focuses on the natural world around us in pieces such as Bonnie Berk’s, about spending time in nature to restore our Yin/Yang balance. Liz Miedrich takes us to the mountain in Perry County and Stephanie Sellers talks about the Native Americans’ deep connection with the natural place in which they and their ancestors lived. There’s much more here to remind us that TV, Facebook, iPhone, and even the technologically outdated, but much used cell phone I have will not replace our relationship with the natural world. At Spiral Path Farm’s monthly open house for all of its CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) members, I enjoyed seeing city/suburban families making the trek to the hills and fields of Perry County, and oh-ing and ah-ing about all that could be seen and experienced there. While on their cell phones, I could overhear conversations with friends about "being out in the middle of nowhere." Remember, nowhere is also Now Here. We might be in nowhere, but we are also Now Here, in the foothills of the Appalachians, among the rolling hills and trees, which are producing our oxygen, food, spiritual sustenance, connection to nature. As Bonnie Berk says in her article, "Step outside and see for yourself the healing properties of spending time outdoors...rediscover your true nature, through nature."
Have a wonderful fall!
Carol
