Note from the Editor/Publisher
I am so looking forward to clearing out the old this winter. Life has a way of piling up through the year, leaving me with a sense of not being able to catch up. As our local natural world settles in to survive the cold and darker days, we, too, have the opportunity to take stock, sort out and get rid of what will not serve us in the coming year. Not only can we physically get rid of what we are done with, but we can take the opportunity for mental, emotional and spiritual review as well. Along those lines, this issue provides food for thought with articles like "Spiritual Fitness" and "Winter: Time to Hibernate," "Creating Peace," and "Intentional Dreaming." At the same time, we do need to remain awake and be participants in what is occurring in the greater world. In that sense this is not a time to retrench. With fewer outdoor tasks to do, winter may even provide more opportunity for us to play our part in the direction our community is taking. Here in Perry County, some of us are talking about reviving the Perry County Natural Living Association we formed back in the late seventies. At that time we found a community of mutual interests and needs, set up a food co-op and had potluck suppers where our kids played and we talked about our important issues. Many of us still get together socially, but more connections are needed with older and younger generations brought together in common projects and interests. When I attended the PA Renewable Energy and Sustainable Living Festival, I admired the great number of socially active organizations at work in the Lehigh Valley/Kutztown area. Times are hard for many people right now. Here, too, it’s time to gather and plan, and make things happen. I keep hearing that refrain that Bob Dylan sang in the seventies: "...strengthen the things that remain."
Peace, Carol
