Andy Lau
“Beyond Oil: Envisioning a Solar Future”

Starting with an overview of our energy situation and the two enormous challenges of dwindling fossil fuels and climate change, this presentation leads the audience through an exploration of renewable energy alternatives. While suggesting solutions, emphasis is on basic questions that should be applied to any energy alternative: Is it renewable? Does it provide more energy than it takes to harness it? Is it compatible with nature? Are there better ways? Is it necessary? What are the costs? Is it beautiful?

Andy Lau is a Professional Engineer and an associate professor of engineering at Penn State University, University Park. He has over 28 years engineering experience in solar energy and energy efficiency in buildings with expertise in building energy analysis, green design, solar energy technologies and computer modeling. He is a Partner with the 7group, LLP and helped found the Green Building Association of Central Pennsylvania. Currently, Andy is Associate Director of Penn State University's Center for Sustainability and is actively involved in Penn State's Solar Decathlon project—a 100% solar-powered house to be built in the Washington, DC mall in the fall of this year.
